[00:01:14] TODAY’S STORY

[00:01:14] TODAYS STORY: Today’s story.

[00:01:22] Taty Fittipaldi: Once upon a time in the fast paced and cutthroat world of the global corporations, there was an ambitious and driven executive named Alex. Alex started his career in finance, but after dealing with many investors relation meetings, he ended up slowly pivoting his career to the public relations world. As a PR, Alex had climbed the corporate ladder with determination and hard work, becoming a respected leader within his organization. However, as he achieved higher levels of success, he found it increasingly difficult to [00:02:00] maintain a healthy work life balance. You see, Alex was so consumed by his professional responsibilities that he often neglected his personal life. He would spend long hours at the office, sacrificing precious time with his family and friends.

[00:02:17] Taty Fittipaldi: Weekends and vacations were merely extensions of his workday, as he constantly checked emails and took business calls, even during supposed downtime.

[00:02:30] Taty Fittipaldi: “It’s work life integration, honey,” said Alex to his wife, once, during a discussion. ” Sometimes you also call me during the day, right?” He completed.

[00:02:41] Taty Fittipaldi: “Alex, give me a break with the BS.” She replied and continued. “You know very well that the integration in this balance requires much more for the work side. I’m worried!”

[00:02:54] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex always brushed off conversations like this after momentarily appeasing [00:03:00] his wife.

[00:03:01] Taty Fittipaldi: At first Alex’s dedication and single minded focus seemed to pay off: he received accolades for his achievements, received promotion after promotion, and was admired by his peers.

[00:03:14] Taty Fittipaldi: However, as the time went on the toll of his imbalanced lifestyle started to take a noticeable effect on him. Physically, he became tired and ran down. His once healthy habits from his youth were all replaced by unhealthy snacking and lack of exercise. He started gaining weight and feeling constantly fatigued.

[00:03:38] Taty Fittipaldi: These signs of declining health were hard to ignore, but Alex pushed them aside, believing that his professional success was more important. “This is for us, babe,” he once said during another discussion. “To have a comfortable life, to have a comfortable future.”

[00:03:57] Taty Fittipaldi: “Alex,” his wife broke [00:04:00] into tears. “That’s BS! You’re addicted to the possibility of praise.” Sobbing profusely, she finally said, “All that you’re doing means nothing if you die and leave me alone.”

[00:04:13] Taty Fittipaldi: Once again, he brushed off what he thought was drama, but the truth was that his declining performance at work soon became evident. The once high performing executive started making mistakes, missing deadlines, and losing focus during meetings.

[00:04:32] Taty Fittipaldi: His colleagues, who had once Praised him, began to talk down on him, criticizing his lackluster performance and questioning his abilities, not always behind his back. By the way. As you could tell, from heated discussions that could be heard the other way of the corridor.

[00:04:53] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex, who had always prided himself on his professional reputation, felt demoralized and lost.

[00:04:59] Taty Fittipaldi: [00:05:00] Indeed, he never made mistakes before or said the wrong things during a PR meeting. He always was so full of tact and so clever. What was happening? The constant pressure and criticism began to erode Alex’s confidence and motivation.

[00:05:17] Taty Fittipaldi: He started doubting himself, feeling like he was no longer capable of delivering the results he once did. The joy and passion he once had felt for his work were replaced by feelings of emptiness, disappointment, and even fear.

[00:05:36] Taty Fittipaldi: One day, Alex’s breaking point arrived. He experienced a health scare that forced him to take a step back and reassess his priorities.

[00:05:47] Taty Fittipaldi: 911. What’s your emergency?

[00:05:50] Taty Fittipaldi: “My husband is down,” replies the crying wife. The officers on the other side of the line, calmly instructed Alex’s wife on the next steps.

[00:05:59] Taty Fittipaldi: [00:06:00] And thankfully, Alex was taken to the hospital in time, before a tragic end happened.

[00:06:06] Taty Fittipaldi: When Alex finally opened his eyes after a few days, his wife was sleeping on a couch next to him. He felt groggy and confused. He noticed tubes coming out of his arm and mouth. His wife Helen noticed the movement and quickly came to his aid. “What happened?” He asked. ” You had a heart attack, Alex. You are fine now, but we’ll have to make some drastic changes around here. At least, if you want to keep me as your wife.” She said assertively.

[00:06:39] Taty Fittipaldi: At that moment, he realized that his relentless pursuit of professional success had come at a great cost. He had sacrificed his well being, his relationships, and his happiness. The very next day after he woke up, word at the office spread that Alex was up.

[00:06:59] Taty Fittipaldi: No [00:07:00] one came to visit him, except for his boss. ” Good to see you were up, Alex. But I’m not bringing you good news, though,” started the boss. Alex cleared his throat and asked, “What’s up, Harold?” Harold also cleared his throat and started slowly saying, “I understand you’re conditioned and I don’t want to make things hard for you, but your time at the hospital cost us a multi million dollar deal.

[00:07:27] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex gasped in shock. “What do you mean, Harold? That account was a done deal. There was only the contract left to sign. They were one hundred percent on board!” Harold scratched his head and tried to convey in the best way he could.

[00:07:42] Taty Fittipaldi: He started, ” Well, they said, if you can’t even take care of your health, you can’t possibly help them spearhead this size of a project.” And then Harold completed the blow. “I’m sorry, the partnership is off.”

[00:07:59] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex was [00:08:00] beyond shocked. “What?” He sarcastically laughed. They can’t possibly be blaming me for having a heart attack!”

[00:08:08] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex was stunned. Utterly shocked. More so, a few months later, when he was laid off from the company with a very lame excuse, losing many of his premium benefits and a sizable amount of money that would come from long term rewards and bonuses.

[00:08:25] Taty Fittipaldi: At this point, his mental game went down the drain. He was shit talking himself, and this self talk not only became extremely negative, but persistently toxic, to the point that it was contaminating his relationship with his wife, parents, and close friends.

[00:08:44] Taty Fittipaldi: I don’t know what gotton into after this heart attack, Alex,” said Hellen while closing the door when she decided to move back with her mom. He drowned heavier into his couch, feeling helpless. The telephone rang and it was his [00:09:00] pharmacist. “Mr. Harris, this is a reminder that you have to get your prescription medicine by the end of today. When you asked us to refill it, we warned you that you would pay for it even if you didn’t come to get it.

[00:09:14] Taty Fittipaldi: With a sigh, he replied, “Right, right, I’m stopping by,” said Alex.

[00:09:19] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex was a financially conscious professional, and he otherwise would not even need these kinds of reminders. His wife’s voice came to his mind. I don’t know what gotten into you after this heart attack, Alex. Yes, what’s gotten into me? He reflected while waiting on the pharmacy line.

[00:09:37] Taty Fittipaldi: A lady behind him on the line, tried to make conversation. ” You seem quite distracted and distraught, sir.” With one of his toxic lines, he briskly said, “I’m sorry, I’m not in the mood for your psychic bullshit.” ” I’m not a psychic,” said the lady, “I, I don’t want to push your buttons, I’m sorry. [00:10:00] It’s bones of the trade, I apologize.” that sort of caught his curiosity, so he asked, ” Oh, what do you do?” In a five minute conversation with the lady while in the line, Alex learned about executive coaching and something called personal leadership.

[00:10:15] Taty Fittipaldi: The lady explained that there are five elements of personal leadership in order to thrive in any job and explained that they work like a chain. When one falls apart, everything falls apart. Somehow, Alex felt quite hopeful with this brief conversation because she conveyed that personal leadership can be regained and life could be put back on track.

[00:10:39] Taty Fittipaldi: He took her card and carefully stored it in his wallet, determined to make an appointment with her later in the week.

[00:10:47] Taty Fittipaldi: When the day finally came, he was received by this stranger with warmth but confidence. “Welcome Alex, I’m so happy to have you here,” his new coach said.

[00:10:59] Taty Fittipaldi: During their [00:11:00] first session, his coach guided him to talk about everything that went through at work until his dismissal day and explained how he slowly killed the five elements of personal leadership, throughout his career. “That didn’t happen overnight, Alex,” she said.

[00:11:18] Taty Fittipaldi: Then she continued, “personal leadership is the ability to take care of your wellbeing, have an assertive and positive mental game, manage your willpower, control your stress, and lead a balanced life to exert this full personal power.

[00:11:35] Taty Fittipaldi: “In that sense,” she continued, How exactly wrong was that partner, when they said that you didn’t take care of your health?”,

[00:11:44] Taty Fittipaldi: Alex frowned and didn’t want to admit it, but deep down, He knew she was right to point it out.

[00:11:51] Taty Fittipaldi: They were not wrong. He was not ready to say that though. So instead he said, “Okay, so tell me more about these five elements you mentioned in the [00:12:00] pharmacy.” “All right,” she said.

[00:12:02] Taty Fittipaldi: “The five elements are, number one, what’s in your head and heart, which I call mental game, and willpower management.

[00:12:10] Taty Fittipaldi: Number two, self discipline and self care to take care of your health and well being. Number three, productivity strategies to top perform under tight situations.

[00:12:21] Taty Fittipaldi: Number four, stress management to maximize endurance during difficult times.

[00:12:28] Taty Fittipaldi: And number five, vision and values to feel fulfilled and happy with what you are doing and not with what you are receiving in return.

[00:12:40] Taty Fittipaldi: He listened carefully before saying. ” Huh, this is not exactly a rocket science.”

[00:12:46] Taty Fittipaldi: The coach smiled and silently cued him with her eyebrows for him to continue. “Well, sure, I admit that I was a bit lacking in discipline and self care. But not the [00:13:00] rest. I’m not a screw up, you know. I didn’t deserve this. I didn’t deserve what happened. The coach cleverly waited for him to vent the steam and frustration.

[00:13:12] Taty Fittipaldi: “Alex, do you feel like a screw up right now?” She slowly asked.

[00:13:17] Taty Fittipaldi: His eyes started watering and soon he was battling against tears, something that hardly ever happened to him, and suddenly he broke down into tears.

[00:13:31] Taty Fittipaldi: “Yes, of course, I feel very much like a screw up. I lost my job. I lost my wife. I lost my income. I lost my pride. What else do you want me to lose to feel like a screw up?” He darted. The coach silently gave him the proper space to share his feelings fully. Her face and body language did not show a single sign of judgment or pity.

[00:13:58] Taty Fittipaldi: “Alex,” she pointed out. [00:14:00] “You almost lost your life. I’m sure your job, your wife and your income are all precious to you and you equate them to success, but what about your life? What do you equate your life to?”

[00:14:17] Taty Fittipaldi: Between sobs and tears, he kept silent while pondering this question.

[00:14:22] Taty Fittipaldi: What do I equate my life to?

[00:14:25] Taty Fittipaldi: Through the long silence, during which the coach didn’t say or even move, she noticed Alex’s tears stop rolling. “I almost lost my life,” he finally realized. After this insight, which was not only rationalized but felt, they went over the five elements again together, one by one, and he was able to recognize things that he could have done better before back then.

[00:14:57] Taty Fittipaldi: At the end of the session, they [00:15:00] agreed to meet regularly to create new personal leadership routines to support him in his new job, whatever that will be, and to mend his relationship with his wife, parents and friends.

[00:15:12] Taty Fittipaldi: With newly found determination, Alex left the executive coach’s office, decided to make a change.

[00:15:20] Taty Fittipaldi: He sought support from his remaining friends and met regularly with his professional coach, to help him regain balance in his life: he learned to set boundaries, observe and modulate his self talk, and put self care more to the forefront of his life.

[00:15:37] Taty Fittipaldi: [He started exercising regularly, eating healthier, and spending quality time with his family and friends.]

[00:15:44] Taty Fittipaldi: and, he did make up with his wife, which is a beautiful love story that we might tell you in the future episode. For now, let’s just say that his wife told Alex that this Alex felt like the Alex [00:16:00] she first met. “I don’t know what gotten into you after this heart attack.” They both laughed together. And she continued.

[00:16:07] Taty Fittipaldi: “But I am glad you are back, Alex.”

[00:16:10] Taty Fittipaldi: Not long after this, he also landed an awesome, exciting job. As Alex’s personal life improved, so did his professional performance. Not only did he find a new job, but his new work was much more aligned with his true values and purpose. His new values and purpose.

[00:16:31] Taty Fittipaldi: With a clear mind and renewed energy, he regained his focus and regained his self respect back. In time, he also earned his peers respect. He learned to delegate tasks, prioritize effectively, and maintain a healthier work life balance. Over time, Alex not only regained his former success, but also surpassed it.

[00:16:55] Taty Fittipaldi: However, this time, he did so with a newfound [00:17:00] wisdom and perspective, and without neglecting his personal life, he no longer sacrificed his personal life for his career, realizing that true success is measured by joy and fulfillment in all aspects of life.

[00:17:16] Taty Fittipaldi: Life.

[00:17:18] Taty Fittipaldi: His life equated to happiness and the possibility of smiling for another day, he realized.

[00:17:26] (HARP MUSIC)

[00:17:26] Taty Fittipaldi: And so, Alex’s story serves as a powerful reminder that achieving a healthy work life balance is essential, not only for our well being, but also for our long term sustainable success. It teaches us that no matter how ambitious and driven we are, we must not forget to nurture ourselves and the relationships that truly matter. Personal leadership is the foundation for any leadership and long lasting success.[00:18:00]

[00:18:26] TODAY’S LESSON

[00:18:26] TODAY’S LESSON: Today’s lesson.

[00:18:35] Taty Fittipaldi: Personal leadership is one of the four success pillars in the global leadership pillars and is the ability to take care of one’s well being, have an assertive and positive mental game, manage willpower. Control stress and lead a balanced life to exert full personal power.

[00:18:54] Taty Fittipaldi: Just to make a quick recap, the four pillars of global leadership are [00:19:00] personal leadership that leads self for greater performance, people leadership that leads people to empower a vision, organizational leadership that leads ideas to create positive business impact. And cultural leadership that leads behavior to create an inclusive and happy workplace.

[00:19:22] Taty Fittipaldi: In this episode, we learned about the importance of personal leadership. Personal leadership or how we lead ourselves in our lives is essential for happiness. It’s a foundational leadership for thriving success. It comprises five elements.

[00:19:39] Taty Fittipaldi: Element number one, mental game and willpower management.

[00:19:44] Taty Fittipaldi: Every human being starts their day with a certain amount of willpower. Throughout the day, this willpower will be used for many things. As the day goes by, this amount of willpower diminishes. By the end of the day, [00:20:00] naturally, you will have very limited or no willpower left.

[00:20:05] Taty Fittipaldi: When we have no willpower left, we make poorer choices because willpower is no longer present. This will affect our mental game or mental state. We might allow our self talk to get the best of us. We may use toxic thinking, self criticism, and a very hard self judgment, which can all impact self confidence, and overall mood, among other awful side effects, like anxiety and stress.

[00:20:35] Taty Fittipaldi: Our mental state is one of the single most important things there is, when we want to top perform and be confident. So managing our mental state is key in any endeavor. This is also called emotional regulation. How we regulate our emotions and thoughts when perceiving situations around us. And because of its close relationship to mental [00:21:00] states, Management of our willpower levels and how and when we use it is also important when it comes to personal leadership.

[00:21:10] Taty Fittipaldi: Element number two self discipline and self care. Well being does not happen by magic. It takes self discipline and self care with the intent of achieving well being. We have to establish consistent routines that take care of our well being as a whole. And consistency comes from self discipline that is regulated by our willpower.

[00:21:34] Taty Fittipaldi: See how connected these elements are? Well, it’s like Alex’s coach put it. All these elements are like a chain. The higher our self discipline and attention to self care, the higher our performance will be because we will be full of energy and good health.

[00:21:53] Taty Fittipaldi: Element 3, Productivity Strategies.

[00:21:56] Taty Fittipaldi: Often, when people think about productivity, [00:22:00] they think about productivity apps, time management, and so on. The root of productivity is actually something else.

[00:22:12] Taty Fittipaldi:  It’s our relationship with time. Our productivity equates to this relationship. If you have a good, strong relationship with your time, you’ll be very productive.

[00:22:28] Taty Fittipaldi: Check this out. Every human has, of course, 24 hours in their days. How we decide to spend these hours is a make or break factor for productivity. Your intent to be productive plays a significant role in your performance. The apps, time management and so on, are just the tactical approach to the strategy and mindset of deciding to be more productive.

[00:22:59] Taty Fittipaldi: [00:23:00] A good relationship with our time means valuing our time like any other values we have in life. Because we give it importance, we choose how to spend it and what to spend it with. When we have a good relationship with time, we are more deliberate and careful about what we’re spending our time with.

[00:23:23] Taty Fittipaldi: I have one rule that I set for myself when it comes to spending my time. If it’s useful for a goal I have, then I will invest my time. If not, bye bye!

[00:23:37] Taty Fittipaldi: Now listen to something very important. I am not saying that a lazy Sunday is unacceptable, for example. That’s not what I’m saying at all. Look, sometimes one goal of ours can be rest. Yes! Believe it or not, rest can be a goal. So yes, in that case, a lazy Sunday [00:24:00] is in order. So, look, how you spend your time must be aligned with your goals, objectives, and values. I know it sounds crazy to say that. You had a super productive Sunday when you had a lazy Sunday. But the truth is that if that rest moment was effective, you were very productive in achieving your goal of resting.

[00:24:24] Taty Fittipaldi: Element number four, stress management. Look, we all go through stressful times and hardships. That’s life, right? From a smaller hurdle or a very difficult situation, everyone goes through difficult times. Part of good personal leadership is how we manage all the stress to operate and function during these stressful conditions.

[00:24:49] Taty Fittipaldi: That’s why Alex’s coach said that stress management is to maximize endurance during difficult times.

[00:24:58] Taty Fittipaldi: Now, listen, we have to [00:25:00] learn strategies to curb and manage stress and test them to see which ones work best for each one of us. We are unique, so it makes sense that some strategies may work for us while others don’t. It’s our job to find those that make sense to us and to what we believe in.

[00:25:21] Taty Fittipaldi: Element number 5, core values identification.

[00:25:25] Taty Fittipaldi: During our story today, Alex realized that his values had driven him to that dark place. Bit by bit, he changed the way he saw the world, and he noticed he gained new values that supported him way more. Personal leadership is also about you knowing what your core values are. Why? Because when we do stuff aligned with our core values, it makes us happier.

[00:25:52] Taty Fittipaldi: Simple as that.

[00:25:53] Taty Fittipaldi: So, identifying and following our core values is a critical part of personal leadership. [00:26:00] This element is like the wheel in the five elements. It gives us direction, the right direction, mind you. Self awareness is the first step to making sensible and reliable decisions that will drive greater happiness.

[00:26:15] Taty Fittipaldi: Which means that identifying what your values are is critical. Don’t brush this off, my friend, label each value, give it a name. If you don’t know how to do this, I will leave a fabulous article in the show notes below as an exercise for you.

[00:26:33] Taty Fittipaldi: So as you can see, good leadership starts with good personal leadership. Most leadership programs teach important skills for good leadership, but awesome programs will portray all four pillars of the global leadership pillars, including personal leadership, which is essential for an impactful and high performance.

[00:26:56] Taty Fittipaldi: Personal leadership and how you show up and [00:27:00] perform is also part of our job as a global leader. We must consistently create a solid routine in our lives, incorporating all these five elements of personal leadership to deliver above and beyond our own expectations. Don’t do it like Alex did before.

[00:27:19] Taty Fittipaldi: Don’t do things for what you are receiving . You must be happy with what you are doing despite what you are receiving.

[00:27:46] TODAY’S APPLICATION

[00:27:46] Today’s tips to apply what you learned.

[00:27:55] Taty Fittipaldi: Here are a few strategies and routines you can use for each [00:28:00] element to improve your personal leadership.

[00:28:02] Taty Fittipaldi: Tip number one, a tip for willpower management and mental game. Monitor your willpower levels throughout the day and observe your self talk.

[00:28:14] Taty Fittipaldi: If you see your self talk becoming acid and toxic, quickly shift it by hearing uplifting music, using some affirmations, or positive audibles, or talking to an upbeat person.

[00:28:28] Taty Fittipaldi: Tip number two, a tip for self discipline and self care. Establish at least one routine per day that will focus on self care. You don’t have to go overboard here.

[00:28:40] Taty Fittipaldi: Sometimes simple can be enough for starters. If you can’t yet go to the gym, consider at least acquiring a step monitor and commit to walking 200 steps every two hours, for example. A thousand steps a day is far from the 10, 000 recommended steps [00:29:00] per day, but it’s certainly far better than zero.

[00:29:04] Taty Fittipaldi: You can also include in your routine a healthy treat or reward for every time you complete a goal.

[00:29:11] Taty Fittipaldi: Tip number three, a tip for productivity. Learn how you usually use your day. You might surprise yourself. Install apps like Smarter Time or Rescue Time to learn more about how you use your time. Then… Slowly make changes. If you learn you spend too much time on social media or TV, for example, you can slowly change that with quantifiable goals.

[00:29:41] Taty Fittipaldi: For example, you might decide to spend 30 minutes less per week on social media, and use this time to read a book or walk the dog. Remember, always do things aligned with your goal. That’s the basis of having a good relationship with time.

[00:29:58] Taty Fittipaldi: Tip number four, [00:30:00] a tip for stress management.

[00:30:02] Taty Fittipaldi: Learn what the external things that stress you out are and the internal things that cross your mind and make you feel preoccupied. Stress can be external. Or internal. Some sources of internal stress are totally in our minds.

[00:30:23] Taty Fittipaldi: When we learn what they are, we can start to take actions on either eliminate, reduce, or avoid them.

[00:30:30] Taty Fittipaldi: Tip number five, a tip for core values identification. There are many exercises and strategies to define our core values. Choose one and define your core values. Place your top five or six values in a prominent place where you can review and revisit at least once a year. Look, values change over time because we become more experienced and wise.

[00:30:55] Taty Fittipaldi: So revisiting them is crucial for maintaining our happiness [00:31:00] and alignment with them. I will leave some resources on these topics for you in the show notes below. Make sure to visit and reflect on them.

[00:31:11] KEY TAKEAWAYS

[00:31:11] KEY TAKEAWAYS: Key Takeaways

[00:31:21] Taty Fittipaldi: What’s your main takeaway from this episode? Here are mine.

[00:31:25] Taty Fittipaldi: Number one, personal leadership is one of the four success pillars in the global leadership pillars and is the ability to take care of your wellbeing, have an assertive and positive mental game, manage will power, control stress, and lead a balanced life to exert our full personal power.

[00:31:46] Taty Fittipaldi: Number two, it comprises five elements of personal power, willpower and mental game management, self-discipline and self-care, productivity strategies, stress management. [00:32:00] And clear core values alignment.

[00:32:03] Taty Fittipaldi: Number three, our relationship with time is a crucial aspect of personal leadership. How we choose to spend our time is telling about this relationship.

[00:32:14] Taty Fittipaldi: Number four, the way we address ourselves and how our self talk presents itself can impact our mood and confidence. And mind you, even people around us. And they are strictly connected with willpower management. In other words, our mental states are connected with our willpower levels.

[00:32:37] Taty Fittipaldi: Number five, self discipline and self care are also connected. If we don’t choose consciously to consistently self care, we will lose personal power over time because we will become weaker and less healthy.

[00:32:53] Taty Fittipaldi: Number six, Stress can come from external or internal sources.

[00:32:58] Taty Fittipaldi: Identifying them [00:33:00] is the first step to then finding strategies to eliminate, reduce, or avoid them.

[00:33:06] Taty Fittipaldi: Number seven, aligning all our daily activities with our core values is essential for happiness. That’s why identifying our core values and revisiting them at least once a year is also important.

[00:33:19] Taty Fittipaldi: And number eight, these five elements work like a chain. When one of its links is affected, slowly all others will crumble together. When working with personal power, we must pay attention to all five elements together.
