The Leadership Nest Podcast | S3 EP#002 – Study Case: Inner vs. Outer Stress: Managing Workplace Pressure
[00:00:00] Introduction
[00:00:00]
Taty Fittipaldi: In this episode, we’ll learn about managing inner and outer stress, a critical skill for maintaining balance and effectiveness in high pressure roles. I’ll share a study case about Danielle or Dan, an HR professional who found herself overwhelmed by the combination of her own self-imposed pressure and the external demands of a new high stakes role.
She realized she needed to address both types of stress before burnout took over. We will explore the skills Dan developed, the lessons she learned, and the incredible results she achieved by building self-compassion, reframing her inner narrative, and setting clear boundaries.
Hopefully, you can leverage her experiences and insights to help you better manage stress and thrive in your own leadership journey.

[00:01:46] Today’s Story
Today’s Story: Today’s story.
Taty Fittipaldi: Let me tell you about Danielle or Dan, as she often is [00:02:00] called. She’s an HR professional, working for a global manufacturer. Dan is someone who’s always held herself to extremely high standards, constantly pushing herself to achieve more and do better. While that drive made her successful in previous roles, her inner pressure, her self-talk, and internal narrative was often critical and harsh.
In her earlier roles, this didn’t seem to be a huge problem. Those positions were more operational, clearly defined, and relatively low stress. But things changed when Dan was promoted to a new, more challenging job. Suddenly, she found herself juggling high stakes, demanding responsibilities, and significant external pressure.
The outer stress compounded her inner pressure creating a perfect storm that left her overwhelmed and teetering on the edge of burnout. [00:03:00] She knew she needed to figure out how to handle both the internal and external stress before it spiraled out of control.
Recognizing the need for support, Dan knew it was time to get some help. She wasn’t new to coaching, and had already experienced the benefits in the past. What made her ready for this moment was her understanding of how to maximize the sessions. Dan knew exactly what she wanted to work on and was prepared to fully engage in the process.
Why Dan chose me
Dan reached out to me because of my reputation for helping clients break down complex situations into smaller, more manageable pieces. She needed someone who could help her gain clarity, not just about the challenges in her role, but also about her own thoughts and feelings.
That’s where I come in. Together, we set out to untangle the layers of stress, and build a plan for her [00:04:00] to thrive.
Diving into coaching, one of the first things Dan and I agreed on was that her pattern of self pressure wasn’t something we could change overnight. Years of harsh self-talk had carved deep grooves in her mind and undoing that would take time and intentional effort. We focused on three key areas.
Number one, building self-compassion. This was a big one. We worked to help Dan recognize her self-critical patterns, and replace them with kinder, more supportive self-talk.
Number two, reframing her inner narratives. I challenged Dan to notice when her internal stories were driving her stress and helped her reframe those narratives into more constructive ones.
Number three, setting boundaries. We created what I like to call [00:05:00] rules of self engagement to help Dan manage external stress more effectively. This included strategies for saying no, prioritizing workload, and protecting her personal time.
But we didn’t stop there. To support her in this new role, we also tackled organization and skill gaps. We worked to help Dan feel confident in her abilities and prepared for the challenges ahead. What really stood out was her commitment. Dan was all in! She completed every piece of homework I gave her, consumed extra resources between sessions and came to each meeting ready to dive in.
The results.
The transformation was remarkable. Dan quickly began incorporating self-compassion in her daily life. She gave me permission to challenge her every time I noticed her sliping back into her old patterns, and she [00:06:00] responded by reframing her self-talk, in real time. As she reduced her internal pressure, the weight of external stress became more manageable.
Dan also realized that her new role demanded new habits, especially when it came to self-care. She started prioritizing her physical and mental health, which not only improved her focus and decision making at work, but also allowed her to truly enjoy her downtime with her husband and friends.
The results were undeniable. Dan felt more centered, made better decisions during the day, and found herself reconnected to the joy in her personal life, a feeling she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
Dan’s message for leaders.
Dan shared something powerful as we wrapped up our coaching sessions. She said, I didn’t realize how much I was impacting [00:07:00] myself and the people around me until I gained control over my inner and outer pressure. She explained that as she began to manage her stress and return to her authentic self, the ripple effects were immediate.
Her husband noticed the change. Her friends felt it, and even her colleagues responded differently. Dan’s story is a reminder for all leaders. Your mood and energy don’t just affect you. They influence everyone around you, and often you don’t see the full extent of that impact until it’s too late.
Dan’s journey is a testament to the power of self-compassion, reframing, and creating boundaries. By committing to her growth and embracing the tools we worked on together, she not only succeeded in her role, but also rediscovered the balance and happiness she deserved. This [00:08:00] episode is for anyone who felt the weight of stress and wondered if it’s possible to thrive under pressure. Dan’s story proves that it is, and that sometimes the key lies in learning to be kinder to yourself.

[00:08:53] Today’s Lesson
Today’s Lesson: Today’s [00:09:00] lesson.
Taty Fittipaldi: Dan’s story reminds us of something we often overlook as leaders: the power of self-compassion and how it can transform not just how we handle stress, but also how we lead and connect with others.
Key takeaways.
One of Dan’s biggest breakthroughs was realizing that self-compassion isn’t about being soft. It’s about creating a mental space to process challenges effectively. By replacing her harsh inner dialogue with supportive self-talk, she not only reduced her stress, but also became a more effective decision maker. She also discovered that managing external stress required clear boundaries by setting rules of self engagement. Dan learned to prioritize what truly mattered, say no to what didn’t, and protect her personal time. [00:10:00] Perhaps, most importantly, Dan realized that her role as a leader demanded more than professional skills. It required habits that supported her physical and mental wellbeing. This shift helped her stay centered and work while also fully enjoying her downtime.
Leadership learnings.
For global leaders, Dan’s journey highlights a critical lesson. Inner narratives shape your outer impact. If your self-talk is constantly negative or critical, it can drain your energy and limit your ability to lead effectively. Another key takeaway is the importance of setting boundaries. Leaders often feel the pressure to take on everything, but saying yes to everything leads to burnout. Learning to prioritize and protect your time isn’t just [00:11:00] about survival. It’s about thriving. And finally, leaders need to recognize that their mood and energy ripple outward. Whether it’s with your team, your family, or your friends, your state of mind influences everyone around you.
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s essential for effective leadership.
So how does this apply to you? Start by checking in with yourself. What’s your inner narrative right now? Is it supportive or critical? If it’s the latter, what small steps can you take to reframe it? Next, look at your boundaries. Are you protecting your time and energy, or are you constantly feeling overwhelmed?
Setting even one small boundary can make a big difference. Dan’s story shows us that when [00:12:00] we take control of our inner and outer stress, the benefits extend far beyond us. We become better leaders, better colleagues, and better partners.
So take a moment to reflect what’s one thing you can do today to start making that shift.

[00:12:48] Today’s Tips To Apply What You Learned
Today’s Application: Today’s tips to apply what you learned.
Taty Fittipaldi: Let’s break down a few [00:13:00] practical tips from Dan’s story that you can apply in your own leadership journey. Dan’s experience highlighted three key lessons. Self-compassion can help you handle stress more effectively. Clear boundaries protect your time and energy, and prioritizing wellbeing enhances both professional performance and personal happiness. Actionable tips.
Number one, practice self-compassion. Pay attention to your inner dialogue. When you catch yourself being overly critical, pause and reframe it into something more constructive. For example, instead of saying, I’m failing at this try, I’m learning as I go, and that’s okay.
Number two, set clear boundaries. Identify one area in your life where you are feeling stretched too thin. For many, this means saying no to non urgent [00:14:00] tasks or protecting your personal time.
But if you were someone who sees everything as urgent, the challenge might be not about saying no, but about understanding your real priorities. Here’s a tip, take a step back and align your tasks with your values and goals. Ask yourself, does this task contribute to what truly matters to me or my organization?
People who struggle with tools like the Eisenhower Matrix, which is defining what’s important or not versus what’s urgent or not, often need clarity on their goals and priorities. Spend time reflecting on the core objectives and use that as a guide to separate what’s truly important from what’s simply demanding our attention.
Number three, prioritize self-care. [00:15:00] Make time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, reading, getting a massage, or spending time with loved ones. Remember, you can’t lead effectively if you are constantly running on empty. These tips aren’t just about reducing stress. They are about showing up as your best self, both at work and in your personal life. When you take care of your inner world, your leadership and relationships thrive.
