[00:02:00] Today’s Story

Today’s Story: Today’s story.

Taty Fittipaldi: Let me share the story of Lucas, a talented finance leader who found himself in a tough position after a major transition at his company. Many leaders from his original leadership team either left or were moved to other roles, leaving Lucas surrounded by new stakeholders who knew nothing about him.

This was a frustrating situation, but what made it even harder was that Lucas had already been in his position for three years. He had started discussions about his next step, possibly a promotion, but after the transition, those conversations came to a screeching halt. Now, he felt like he had to start from scratch, building trust, establishing his reputation, and convincing the [00:03:00] new leadership of his capabilities all over again.

Realizing the need for support.

At first, Lucas wasn’t sure what kind of help he needed. He was even considering exploring opportunities outside his company. But when we started working together, I helped him realize that this transition didn’t mean he was starting from zero. He still had people within his organization who knew him, trusted him, and respected his work. These connections, were valuable assets. And once Lucas saw that, he became excited to see how he could leverage them.

Why Lucas chose to work with me.

Well, Lucas decided to work with me because of my background as a global executive who had navigated similar transitions in matrix organizations multiple times. He appreciated my firsthand experience and the fact that I had been highly recommended [00:04:00] as someone who could challenge his perspective and uncover hidden opportunities.

He even described me as someone who could shake his grounds and lead him to hidden treasures, which I had to admit. It gave me a good laugh.

Overcoming frustration through reframing.

Lucas didn’t fear coaching itself; he had worked with coaches before, but what he struggled with was the overwhelming frustration of having to rebuild his reputation and trust from scratch. My first task was to help him reframe this mindset.

We shifted his internal narrative from I need to start from zero to build trust and get promoted fast to something much more empowering. I am facing a new challenge where I can leverage existing resources and connections while building a new narrative that aligns with my goals.

This change in [00:05:00] perspective gave Lucas a sense of control. Instead of seeing the transition as a setback, he began viewing it as an opportunity.

Strategizing for success.

With this new mindset in place, we started crafting a clear story for Lucas. The new narrative positioned him as a highly experienced finance leader, well prepared in leadership, on a path to becoming a CFO within the next five to eight years. It highlighted his readiness for the new challenges and his alignment with the company’s transformation goals.

Then we got practical. Here’s how we tackled the situation.

Number one, mapping stakeholders. We identified key stakeholders both within his vertical, and in cross-functional areas who could influence his career path. We also mapped all his allies across the company, people who could help us in promoting Lucas’s new [00:06:00] narrative.

Number two, creating an action plan. For each stakeholder, we design specific actions to build trust, share his narrative, and provide the recurring value. This included strategic one on ones, presenting solutions in meetings, and sharing insights that aligned with the company’s needs.

Number three, follow up and reinforcement. We developed a system for consistent follow ups, ensuring that Lucas’s narrative stayed top of mind for decision makers. This helped build momentum and encouraged stakeholders to actively support his goals.

The results.

The transformation was incredible. In just a few months, Lucas had not only rebuilt his reputation, but had expanded his network of allies across the company. Leaders from cross-functional areas began advocating for him, and his name came up as a [00:07:00] trusted resource during critical conversations.

Before long, lucas was promoted to a new, more senior role with better benefits, higher pay, and a stronger leadership support. But the real victory wasn’t just the promotion, it was the confidence and the clarity Lucas gained through the process.

By reframing his mindset and taking deliberate actions, he was able to turn a frustrating situation into a company defining moment.

Lucas’s message to leaders.

Lucas shared a powerful takeaway from our work together: the right support, like an expert coach cannot only change your mindset to focus on more productive places, but also guide you in taking actions that solidify your strengths and build new connections. These connections became assets not just for my career growth, but for doing great work and [00:08:00] enhancing reputation.

Whoa. He is already talking like a CFO. I asked him, Hey Lucas, your referral said I’d shake your grounds. Did I really live up to that? He smiled and said, Taty, you didn’t just shake my grounds. You shook my entire world. Lucas’s story is a statement to the power of reframing challenges and taking intentional steps to align your goals with your actions.

It’s a reminder that transitions while difficult, can also be opportunities for growth when approached with the right mindset and strategy. If you are feeling stuck after a transition, take a page from Lucas’s journey. Start by reframing your internal story, mapping your key stakeholders, and creating a plan to build trust and share your value.

You might just uncover the hidden treasures waiting in your own [00:09:00] career.

[00:09:36] Today’s Lesson

Today’s Lesson: Today’s lesson.

Taty Fittipaldi: Lucas’s story gives us some valuable lessons about navigating transitions and building a leadership narrative that aligns with your goals. Let’s dive into what he learned and how you can apply it to your own [00:10:00] leadership journey.

Key takeaways.

One of Lucas’s biggest realizations was that transitions don’t mean starting over from scratch. He discovered that even when everything feels new, like a new team or new stakeholders, you can still leverage your existing connections and reputation. It’s about recognizing and building on the strengths you already have.

Another key insight was the power of reframing your internal story. Lucas shifted his mindset from frustration to opportunity, which gave him clarity and confidence. This reframing helped him focus on creating a compelling narrative about his value and future potential.

Leadership learnings

For global leaders, the first big lesson is to always start by reframing your mindset. Transitions are tough, but they also bring [00:11:00] opportunities to redefine how others see you. Instead of focusing on what’s been lost, think about what you can build.

The second lesson is about the importance of business storytelling. Lucas didn’t just let his work speak for itself. Instead, he crafted a narrative that aligned with the company’s goals and his aspirations. This wasn’t just self-promotion, it was about positioning himself as the right person for the challenges ahead.

Finally, strategic stakeholder management is crucial. Mapping out key decision makers and building intentional relationships gave Lucas the platform he needed to share his narrative and gain support. This is something every leader can apply, especially in a fast changing organizational environment.

So how does this apply to you? If you’re facing a transition, start by asking [00:12:00] yourself, what’s the story I want to tell about my value and goals? Then identify the people who need to hear your story and find ways to connect with them.

Look, transitions can feel overwhelming, but they’re also moments of possibility with the right mindset, narrative, and strategy, you can turn any challenge into one opportunity to grow, connect, and lead.

[00:12:53] Today’s Tips To Apply What You Learned

Today’s Application: Today’s tips to apply what you [00:13:00] learned.

Taty Fittipaldi: Let’s break down a few practical tips from Lucas’s story that you can apply to your own leadership journey. Lucas’s experience taught us that transitions don’t mean starting from scratch. By reframing his mindset, crafting a clear leadership narrative, and strategically managing stakeholders, he turned the frustrating situation into an incredible opportunity for growth.

Here are actionable tips.

Number one, reframe your narrative. Don’t let frustration hold you back. We all get frustrated from time to time. It’s inevitable, but feeding this frustration is an option. It’s a choice. Instead, think about how you can position yourself as the right person for the challenges ahead. Craft a leadership story that highlights your value, aligns with organizational [00:14:00] goals, and showcases your future potential.

Number two, map your stakeholders. Identify the key people who need to hear your story. These are the decision makers and influencers who can help support your goals. Build intentional connections with them by sharing insights, volunteer for initiatives, offering solutions, and consistently adding value.

Number three, leverage existing relationships. Even during transitions, there are always people who know and trust you. Reach out to these allies and let them help amplify your credibility with new stakeholders. Let them tell stories about you, your accomplishments, and your skills. I call this echoing stories. Allies are perfect for that.

These tips can help you navigate any transition with confidence and [00:15:00] clarity. They’re not just about advancing your career. They are about building trust, influence, and alignment as a leader.
