Today’s Story: Today’s [00:02:00] story.

Taty Fittipaldi: Let’s dive into Clark’s story. Clark worked for the biggest computer manufacturing company in the US, where he was a marketing expert. After excelling in the Latin America region, he made the lateral move to lead marketing for North America, the company’s largest and most critical market. While his move felt like an exciting challenge, Clark quickly found himself overwhelmed. The volume of work, activities, and constant discussions were more intense than he anticipated.

His supportive boss, though well-meaning, had a hard time saying no to stakeholders. This led to an every growing pile of activities on his plate. While Clark was thrilled with his expanded role, the stress and pressure started to take a toll on his productivity and wellbeing.

When Clark began coaching, he [00:03:00] wasn’t sure how to make the most of it. Initially, he saw the sessions as more of a venting opportunity than a strategy building exercise. Patience was key here. I gently encouraged him to explore his challenges and pick one or two areas to focus on.

Over time, Clark began to understand how coaching could actually help him address his workload issues, in a structured, effective way. That’s when he fully engaged with the process. Clark chose to work with me, because he knew I had firsthand experience navigating global leadership roles, managing stakeholders across regions, and transitioning into expanded responsibilities. He wanted someone who could relate to his challenges, and guide him with actionable advice tailored to his unique situation.

Clark initially feared that coaching would consume time he simply didn’t have. He was hesitant to [00:04:00] commit to full hour sessions, because he felt his workload was already overwhelming. However, he believed I could offer strategies to manage his workload more effectively, so he decided to give it a try with shorter, half hour sessions.

This compromise allowed him to dip his toes into coaching without adding to his stress.

The first step in solving Clark’s workload issue was identifying whether his challenges were rooted in perception or reality. After mapping out his daily activities, it became clear: his workload was genuinely too high.

We zeroed in on three major problem areas: one, data overload and inefficiencies. Clark was spending too much time cleaning data and redoing tasks due to inconsistent processes. We revamped the workflow, [00:05:00] removed unnecessary steps, and automated repetitive tasks.

Number two, stakeholder management. Unrestricted data access for some stakeholders created unnecessary questions and interruptions. We limited access, clarified roles, and set up a structured operating rhythm to deliver reports and updates at defined intervals.

Number three, streamlining communication. Clark often juggled multiple similar tasks. Separately. We bundled these activities into unified sessions, saving time and mental energy.

With these improvements in place, we turned our focus to securing additional support. By showcasing the inefficiencies and the potential for greater impact with a new hire, Clark successfully influenced leadership to approve another team member under him.

The [00:06:00] results.

In just six months, Clark’s workload was completely transformed. By improving processes, streamlining communication, delivering better quality reports, and securing a new team member, he finally had the clarity and control he needed. He felt energized and confident, ready to tackle anything that came his way.

Clark became Superman.

Jokes aside, the story didn’t end there. With his newfound efficiency and proved results, Clark shifted his focus to showcasing his leadership and management acumen.

Together, we worked on crafting an external narrative that highlighted his ability to identify and resolve complex challenges, streamline operations, and drive team performance. He used real examples from his workload transformation to demonstrate his impact and potential to key [00:07:00] stakeholders and decision makers within the company.

Clark’s efforts paid off. His ability to articulate the value he brought to the organization and his leadership capabilities caught the attention of senior leaders. Not only was he recognized for his work, but he was also offered the senior manager promotion to lead marketing in the company’s largest and most competitive sales region.

This move solidified his reputation as a high impact leader, capable of taking on significant challenges and delivering exceptional results.

Clark shared with me how coaching became a game changer in his career. He appreciated having a trusted partner to help him identify the key drivers of his productivity and create actionable plans to address them. He also emphasized the value of crafting compelling narratives to communicate his impact and influence [00:08:00] decisions effectively.

For Clark, the coaching process wasn’t just about fixing processes, it was about building clarity, confidence, and a strong leadership presence. He said, ” having someone to challenge my thinking and guide me in creating stories of Impact made all the difference. It wasn’t just about doing the work, it was about showing the value of the work to the right people.

Clark’s journey reminds us that even when faced with overwhelming challenges, the right strategies, mindset shifts, and support can help us rise above and achieve remarkable success.

Taty Fittipaldi: Clark’s story teaches us a powerful lesson about the interplay between managing workload and crafting effective external narratives. When you are buried under a mountain of work, it’s hard to find the emotional and physical energy to focus on purposeful communication.

Even if you are an excellent communicator, being overwhelmed can make it nearly impossible to tell the right stories or engage with key stakeholders in a way that drives meaningful outcomes. One of [00:10:00] Clark’s biggest learning points was understanding how workload affects not just productivity, but also mental clarity and the ability to lead strategically. By streamlining his processes and tackling the root causes of inefficiencies, Clark freed up not only time, but also mental space. This mental clarity became the foundation for him to communicate more effectively with his stakeholders, building trust, influence and alignment.

For leaders, this is a crucial lesson. Managing your workload isn’t just about reducing stress, it’s about creating space for strategic thinking and communication.

When you’re overwhelmed, your focus narrows to survival mode. But when you create structure and manage priorities, you regain the bandwidth to think big, connect with others, and steer your team or organization in the right [00:11:00] direction.

Clark also learned the importance of purposeful storytelling. Once his workload was manageable, he could focus on building an external narrative that showcased his value. This narrative wasn’t about bragging. It was about demonstrating how his leadership and management capabilities drove real results for the organization. By connecting his actions to outcomes, he turned his day-to-day work into a compelling story that resonated with decision makers.

For global leaders, the takeaway is clear. If you want to make an impact, you need to balance execution with strategy. Start by addressing inefficiencies in your workload. Look for patterns and bottlenecks that drain your time and energy. Then, once you have that clarity, focus on crafting a narrative that highlights your contributions and aligns with organizational goals.

Are you spending too much time on tasks that could be streamlined or delegated? Once you’ve pinpointed the trouble spots, take specific actions to fix them, like automating processes, bundling similar tasks, or simplifying communication channels.
